Quick Tings: An interactive cooking event like no other
Merchant EventZ is thrilled to bring you an event like no other, at a venue like no other. Quick Tings, a unique interactive cooking event, will take place on January 25th, 2018 at the infamous Calabash Bistro in Vancouver’s Gastown district.
A new addition to Dine Out Vancouver Festival‘s event line up, Quick Tings promises to be a fun evening out for everyone. Plan a date night, friends night, mother daughter time, granny’s night out, or just come with your fly self. No matter how you arrive, you will leave full, warm and happy.
Calabash opened in 2010. Owners Roger Collins, Sam Willcocks, and Chef Cullin David started Calabash with the intention that it be more than simply a restaurant. Their vision was to create a space where the culture of the Caribbean could be experienced through fine food, drinks, art and music. In an environment that is warm and welcoming to everyone. They describe Calabash as a vessel.

Their vision has certainly come to life. Calabash made its mark by serving up the finest Caribbean food in the city and then sealed the deal with a creative atmosphere. Chef Cullin satiated our taste buds and earned the title of Vancouver’s Finest Caribbean Chef. With his keen attention to detail, focus on taste, and presentation Chef Cullin successfully created delicious elegant Caribbean dishes meant to satisfy. His unique combinations of West Coast and West Indian cuisine produced a menu that will have you scratching your head at what to order. It’s all so deliciously satisfying, how do you choose?
While Chef Cullin keeps the kitchen performing top notch, Roger keeps the vessel stocked with an excellent selection of artists. The walls of Calabash feature eye catching art from local visual artists including painters, photographers, and fine artists. Afro and latin beats provide a smooth relaxing environment. And for those evenings when you want a little bit more, Calabash puts on everything from poetry nights, to live band performance, and dance nights. Rogers ability to source excellent talent took Calabash from being a restaurant to their true vision of being a vessel of Caribbean creativity and culture.
Manning the ship, Sam ensures everything produced by Calabash is quality. Although, in our research, we only found photographs of him fishing or on the water somewhere so we’re not exactly sure what he does. Whatever he does, it works!
With its welcoming atmosphere, superb food, and a dedication to supporting Vancouver’s Caribbean arts and culture scene, Calabash has become a local favourite and it’s no surprise.
As in the Caribbean, at Calabash, there is something for everyone to love. We are kicking things up a notch for Quick Tings where Chef Cullin will be giving a special lesson on Caribbean cuisine.
About the Chef
Chef Cullin David was born and raised in Vancouver to Guyanese and Irish parents. Cullin started his career as a chef at the tender age of fourteen. When he entered VCC’s culinary program, he knew he found his calling. His career progressed when he started working as Executive Sous Chef under Chef Jean-Francis Quaglia at Provence Marinaside just two years later. During his time working under Chef Jean-Francis Qualia he learned, grew and refined his skills.
A decade later, he partnered with friends Roger Collins and Sam Willcocks to open their dream restaurant, Calabash Bistro. Cullin combined his passion for food, superb training, and Caribbean roots to create an unbeatable menu at Calabash.
On January 25th, attendees of Quick Tings will have the chance to take part in an intimate cooking demonstration with Vancouver’s Finest Caribbean chef, Chef Cullin.
